Getting around the Holy Land is really three separate problems: the ninety kilometres from Jeddah airport to Makkah, the four hundred and fifty between Makkah and Madinah, and the short runs out to the ziyarah sites. Each has a different sensible answer.
Before you book transport
Jeddah airport to Makkah
Roughly ninety minutes by road. Arrange the car before you land rather than at the kerb after a long flight — arrival halls are where tired pilgrims are quoted the worst prices of their trip. Confirm the vehicle size against your luggage, not just your headcount.
Makkah to Madinah
The Haramain high-speed rail runs between the two Harams in about two and a half hours and is the calmest option with children. Intercity coaches are cheaper and slower; a private car is the most flexible and the most expensive. Book rail seats well ahead in Ramadan.
Ziyarah is short trips, not one long day
Jabal al-Nour, Jabal Thawr and the plains of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat sit close together and are usually seen in half a day. Go early — heat on open ground is why most ziyarah trips end sooner than planned. Nothing in a ziyarah is a rite of Umrah; it is history, and it is optional.
